Music Drawings from the Palau

For several years I made drawings while sitting in the audience in the Palau de la Musica in Valencia, Spain. In the darkened auditorium I could not see very well, so I would find out what I had drawn. I used both hands. In one I held a Pilot pen and in the other a brush with a water reservoir which I used to create the washes and shadows.

Here you see the result in an 8 minute video set to Libertadores by Oscar Navarro, who is from Valencia. We have been there when this piece was performed and Oscar was there too. It’s a wonderful piece. I hope you enjoy it and the drawings.

I did these pen and ink drawings in the audience at Palau de la Musica in Valencia, Spain.  The originals are done on very small paper in pen and ink.  I use both hands, one for the ink pen and the other a brush with a water reservoir.  I call it automatic drawing since I can not see what I am doing, between looking at the subject and the darkness of the hall.  I can not work from photographs as photos are not permitted.  Pricing information at the bottom.

The paintings and drawings in this video slide show were done at Palau de la Musica, Valencia.  They explore the state of mind we experience as music transports us to a semi dream-like state.  The paintings and drawings in this video slide show were done at Palau de la Musica, Valencia.  They explore the state of mind we experience as music transports us to a semi dream-like state.  The music is Arco de Noe by Oscar Navarro, a Valencian composer.  He was in the audience the day we heard this piece.

This started life as a drawing at Palau de la Musica.  I enlarged the original, a tiny 2 x 4″ and put it on the canvas board, then painted in with acrylics.  See also Two Fiddles at the Palau, a version of this based on the very same drawing.

This is based on an automatic drawing and given an expressionist treatment in acrylics.  Automatic drawing was popularized by the surrealists in the 1920ś.  The audience is bathed in a comforting blue haze.  The original drawing is posted below.
